Part of the Center Theatre’s mission is to offer educational opportunities to the people of The Maine Highlands. We offer classes and workshops for both youth and adults, taught by professionals in their respective industries.
Our longest running educational program, the Summer Drama Camp, has been running since 1998. We offer two separate 2-week sessions over the summer, open to children through 9th grade. We also offer special 5-day sessions during winter and spring breaks during the school year.
We have many children that have taken these camps multiple times and have moved to being adult performers both locally and across the country. Our goal for Camp is to immerse children in many exciting aspects of theater: team building, improvisation, theater games, exercises, music and dance, all centered on learning, interaction and fun.
Our resident community theatre group, the Slightly Off-Center Players, brings in instructors that offer master classes in physical movement, stage combat, auditioning, technical theatre, and other topics.
Each show that is produced by the Slightly Off-Center Players gives community members the opportunity to learn about all aspects of theatre. Whether a person is interested in learning directing, stage managing, lighting, or set design, the Center Theatre provides the opportunity to immerse oneself in the creative process and learn about the design process from the first production meeting to opening night.
In addition to instruction in live theatre, we also offer master classes and intensives in specialty subjects, such as filmmaking and sound design. Ranging from one afternoon to one week, these classes offer unique opportunities for community members and students to learn from professionals in their fields.
